Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has expressed strong resentment over the Italian government's decision of not to send one of the marines to India to face the ongoing trial on the killing of two Kerala fishermen.
The Chief Minister said that when the incident took place the Italian government and other diplomatic centers tried their best to bypass the legal proceedings. But the strong stand taken by the Government of Kerala was upheld by the High Court and also the Supreme Court, which eventually led to legal proceedings against the marines in India.
It should be recalled that at one stage during the course of the trial, the two marines who had gone to Italy refused to return. After the Government of Kerala lodged its strong protest the Union government intervened and ensured their return to face trial in India, he said.
A similar situation has risen now and the Union government should waste no time in taking appropriate steps to bring the marine back to India. The Prime Minister will be urged to intervene and make it happen. In fact, it is the duty of the nation to respond, the Chief Minister added.
