UDF walk-out over police being soft on SDPI violence

Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala speaking in the Assembly before walk-out on MondayThiruvananthapuram: UDF members staged a walk-out in the Assembly on Monday over police apathy in the investigation of the murder of Youth League worker K. P. Nasarudeen at Kuttiyadi in Vadakara taluk and extremist activities in the area.

Leading the walk-out, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala said that the murder was planned. The RSS and SDPI were leading extremist activities in the State. However, the police were adopting a soft approach.

The walk-out came after Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan refused permission for moving an adjournment motion on the issue, on the basis of the explanation of Chief Minister Pinarai Vijayan.

The Chief Minister said that said that the SDPI was an organisation that gave training to its cadre to commit murders. Their activities posed danger to the State and hence would not be dealt with lightly.

Mr. Vijayan said that the Opposition demand for entrusting the probe into the murder to a special investigation team could be considered. The police had arrested two persons directly involved in the murder and would seriously examine whether there were others behind the murder.

Muslim League leader P. K. Kunhalikutty said that there was nexus between the police and the SDPI at Kuttiyadi.

Joining the walk-out, Mr. Kunhalikutty said that it had been wrong to have given some help when extremist forces surfaced in the form of some organisations that preceded the present ones. Now political parties need to take strong stand to root out extremism. The League had been taking strong stand against extremism. “We have not compromised despite political setbacks.”

Parakkal Abdulla (Muslim League), who had given notice for moving the adjournment motion, said the activities of SDPI created a dangerous situation in Vadakara taluk. Some political parties were supporting them to weaken Muslim League. A special investigation team needed to be deputed to probe the murder as the perpetrators of the murder had links with local police.
