Thiruvananthapuram: Protests are taking place in different parts of the State, especially in Ernakulam district and State capital Thiruvananthapuram, over possible rape, and brutal murder of a dalit student at Perumbavoor in the district.
In Ernakulam district, students of Law College, Ernakulam, and Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, have staged demonstrations. There are also plans for a march to the Office of the Inspector General of Police, Kochi Range in the afternoon.
In Thiruvananthapuram, the protest was led by Janadhipatya Mahila Association. CPI (M) leader P. K. Sreemathi and the candidate in Vattiyoorkavu constituency in Thiruvananthapuram T. N. Seema were among those who led the protest. Some women journalists also joined the protest while there are complaints that the media had by and large ignored the incident which had taken place five days ago. Later, students belonging to the Students Federation of India also staged protests before the Secretariat.

“The distance from Perumbavoor to our homes is less than that from Delhi to Perumbavoor,” said a placard displayed by the protesters and posted on facebook page demanding justice for the victim.
It is reported that the victim had 30 wounds on her body which included a deep wound on her chest and another one that pierced her uterus. The victim had completed her LLB course and was studying for supplementary examinations.
The police have taken two locals into custody and investigations are on. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala will visit the house of the victim on Tuesday afternoon.
