K. T. JaleelThiruvananthapuram: Kerala will have to wait for five years get its streets fee of stray dogs and waste.

Minister for Local Self Government K. T. Jaleel told the Assembly on Thursday that the government had drawn up a project to eliminate stray dogs in five years. A five-year project has also drawn up for freeing the State of waste.

The Minister was replying to debate on the demands for grants for Urban Development, Panchayath and Rural Development.

Mr. Jaleel said that about 6 lakh people were without houses in the State. The government proposed to provide houses for all through the housing mission. The government had set up a committee to recommend on drawing up separate building laws for corporation, municipal and panchayat areas.

The Minister said that Thiruvananthapuram city had been selected for implementation of the Smart City project. The State government had received the official communication from the Centre in this regard on Wednesday. The State and Central government were to contribute Rs. 500 crore each for the Rs. 2500 crore project. The balance was to be raised from other sources.

He said that the government proposed to collect statistics on oversees Keralites using the services of Kudumbasree volunteers. Procedural and legal steps were being taken for merger of Attappady Hill Area Development Scheme with Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA).

After the Minister’s reply, the House passed demands for grants.
