Five years of UDF government was golden age of opportunites, says Governor

Governor P. Sathasivam addressing Asssembly on February 5, 2016Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam devoted most of his address to the Assembly today for highlighting the achievements of the government during the past (nearly) five years.

The Governor recalled that the government had ensured realisation of some of the major infrastructure projects in the State such as the Kochi Metro Rail and Kochi Smart City project. Test landing at Kannur airport will take place this month and work had started on Vizhijam seaport.

The visionary approach of the government had led to the declaration of the first ever start up policy. Kerala had become the first digital State with 100 per cent mobile density, 75 per cent e-literacy and highest digital banking rate. Many colleges and courses were sanctioned.

Mr. Sathasivam told the House that Railways was expected to provide sufficient budgetary provision for Trivandrum Chengannur suburban railway project in 2016-17. A special purpose vehicle with Kerala Government’s participation had been formed for implementation of the project.

He said that work had commended on 56 projects, worth Rs 32,137 crore which were submitted during the global investor’s meet.  The prestigious Kochi Koottanadu Bangalore Mangalore Liquified Natural Gas pipeline that passes through the seven districts of central and northern Kerala has been revived.

The Governor's speech, which took about two and a half hours, was perhaps the longest in the history of the legislature. It was also the first time that the Governor chided the Opposition for persisting with its protest against the Government after he began his address.

“My Government has sanctioned Rs 1200 crore to 1.42 lakh people through the Karunva Benevolent Fund Scheme, which offers treatment assistance up to Rs 2 lakh.”  Under the State Housing Policy the goal of this Government is to ensure that every family has a roof over its head. Several  programmes are proposed to be undertaken during the next year namely, the Karunya Loan Scheme for persons of Low Income Group , Haritha Bhavanam Loan Scheme for persons of LIG Category , Kerala State Shelter Fund Scheme and Santhwanam Rental Housing Scheme.

“My Government has been quite fast in implementing Forest Rights Act. A total of 24898 families have received record of rights under this Act for an extent of 33073 acres.”

The Governor recalled that as part of the 100 day Magic, the government completed 102 of the 107 programmes announced. Seven-Stream projects were implemented following the 100-day magic of the Government. A total of 664 projects were announced under seven streams and 91.71 per cent of them were carried out.
