Kerala attains Total Primary Education

Vice President M. Hamid Ansari being presented a memento by the Minister for Education, Kerala P.K. Abdu RabbVice President of India M. Hamid Ansari declared Kerala as the first Total Primary Education attained State in India here on Wednesday.

Mr. Ansari said the remarkable performance of Kerala on the various socio-economic indicators was a testimony to the transformative nature of mass education. “You have set a model for the rest of the country to follow,” he said.

However, in an open letter to Mr. Ansari, BJP leader V. Muraleedharan discounted Kerala's claims regarding Total Primary Education and demanded that the Vice President should seek and explanation from the State Government.

Cabinet approves New Crop Insurance Scheme

Rice paddyThe Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today has approved the ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana’.

There will be a uniform premium of only 2% to be paid by farmers for all Kharif crops and 1.5% for all Rabi crops. In case of annual commercial and horticultural crops, the premium to be paid by farmers will be only 5%.

No evidence against Mani in bar-bribery case, Vigilance tells Court

K. M. ManiKerala Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau has submitted a report to the Vigilance Court stating that they could not unearth evidence that K. M. Mani, who was  Finance Minister, had either demanded or received bribes in connection with renewal of bar licences.

Superintendent of Police Sukesan, who investigated the case, said in his report that there was discrepancy about the time given by one of the bar owners who claimed to have handed over money to Mr. Mani in Palai.

Vice President calls for positive interaction between different religions

Malappuram: Vice President M Hamid Ansari today called upon people of different faiths and religious traditions to have a mutual understanding and respect that allow them to live and cooperate with each other in spite of their differences.

Inaugurating an Interfaith Conference at Malappuram, Mr. Ansari noted that interreligious and interfaith dialogue had to be more than mere words or talk. ''It must include human interaction and relationships, '' he said.

Chief Minister asks Centre to help Keralites in Togo prison

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has written to External Affairs Minister Sushama Swaraj calling for immediate steps to save the four Malayalees who are imprisoned in Togo.

K. A. Shaji, Tharun Babu, Nithin Babu and O. A. Godwin have been sentenced to four years imprisonment in Togo. They were recruited to Ghana by an agent named Arun Chandran in 2013. They were arrested in Togo for not having required job visa or work permit.
