Kerala Assembly pays homage to poet ONV Kurup

Members of the Assembly standing up in homage to ONV Kurup on MondayKerala Assembly paid homage to poet O. N. V. Kurup on Monday. This is the first time that the House made an obituary reference to a cultural leader who was not a member of the Assembly or political personality.

Making the reference, Speaker N. Sakthan said that ONV’s poetry was noted for their diversity and simplicity. His growth as a poet was rooted on his experiences and awareness of life.

Poet ONV Kurup passes away

O. N. V. KurupCelebrated Malayalam poet O. N. V. Kurup passed away on Saturday afternoon owing to age-related ailments. He was 84 years old.

A Jnanpith award winner, Mr. Kurup has published more than 20 books of poetry and collections. He also distinguished himself as a lyricist. Besides Jnanpith, Mr. Kurup has won more than two dozen literary awards and honours.

Kerala Assembly: Opposition boycotts debate

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy replying to the debate  in the Assembly on ThursdayThe Opposition on Thursday boycotted the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address saying that they cannot cooperate with the proceedings.

The Opposition had earlier urged the governor not to deliver the address as the government was immersed in corruption. It had not right to make policy declaratgions.

The Opposition moved into the well of the House following verbal duel with the ruling front members on the kind of language used by Opposition Leader V. S. Achuthanandan against Congress leader K. Muraleedharan and others.  Mr. Muraleedharan had criticised Mr. Achuthandan yesterday for using unparliamentarily language against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
