Suspense over liquor policy

Bar-signboardThiruvananthapuram: Governor P. Sathasivam’s address to Kerala Assembly on Friday has resulted in suspense over the new government’s liquor policy.

“My Government is of the view that restrictions on consumption of liquor have not yielded the desired positive impact. The increase in the use and availability of drugs in the State is disturbing. The opinion of people of all sections of the society will be taken into account before my Government formulates its policy stand,” the Governor said.

Congress fails to redeem itself

However, voter support was indeed for veteran leader V. S. Achuthanandan.

At the same time, the people of Kerala were not satisfied with what a hyper-active Chief Minister like Oommen Chandy has delivered. So, the LDF will need an energetic man if it is to better Mr. Chandy.

Anger, fear in Kerala over brutal murder of law student

Protests have erupted in Ernakulam where she studied and the neighbouring Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kaladi. A march was taken out to the office of the Inspector General of Police (Kochi Range), Ernakulam.

Thrissur Pooram saved, but tragedies may repeat

Opinion was building in favour of ban on pyrotechnics in Kerala. The tantri and Chief priest (Melsanthi) of Sabarimala temple had stated that fireworks were not part of temple festivals. Swami Prakashananda, head of Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, slammed pyrotechnics in temples noting the practice was wrong. Some temples dropped plans for pyrotechnics while some Christian churches banned it.
